vintage car

I'm starting to feel that running at 47 is like being the owner of a vintage classic car. I'd like to think that I have an old MG, though it's closer to an Austin 7, but the analogy still holds. Basically, to keep this old banger on the road requires constant maintenance and attention. That's OK as far as it goes, but the problem is that no sooner have I fixed the gear box than the gaskets blow. I sort out the gaskets and the suspension goes. I invest time and effort mending the suspension, and the drive shaft promptly snaps.

Basically, I'm cronked again. I fixed that dodgy glute, reinforced those feeble calf muscles, sorted the over stride and the knee drive, could represent the UK at can-openers on the fitball at the Olympics.... but my left knee is still hurting for some unfathomable reason.

Heigh ho, back into the workshop, out with the toolkit and the maintenance manual... this old model T is getting back on the road one way or another...

  • Thanks for the thoughts, Richard. The foam roller is seeing some serious action here! I'll be seeing a physio next week - but I guess I'm just puzzled and a bit exasperated. It held together for more than 12 weeks of Phase 1 running - what's suddenly changed?!?!

And thanks for that reply Robert - made me laugh out loud!

  • Paul ........... "The analogy THAT still holds" is they don't build them like they use too!!!! Sure there's some milage on the clock but look at the build quality, there's no plastic in these babies. And you can work on them, there's no computer's or gadget's just unbreakable quality engineering, that goes and goes and goes.

Yeh sure it breaks down occasionally, but it's easy to fix, doesn't cost the earth and is a real joy to work on and use. Now that's the true analogy if you ask me.

Its all about how you look at it, as we see life through our own experiences we tend to think everyone else is different, somehow better (including me) but we are just the same if not better, at least we are aware we might have poor form or bad shoes and are looking for answers and a way to correct it. We all know the statistic, that at anyone time 75 to 80% of all runners are injured in oneway or another, so your not Robinson Crusoe here by any means.

Get the owners manual out and have a look and I'm sure it's an easy fix, just an adjustment!     Let us know how you go, Ive got a Morris 850 myself maybe the manuals are similar!

  • Paul, I feel your pain as I am 47 as well.  Just when I get pain free, I compress some cartilage in my rib cage and it hurts like the dickens this is after being real sick and missing some runs for two weeks.   I would say it sounds like you are doing all the right stuff, so keep that up.  As for the knee, try rolling out your IT band, I have found that helps when my knee is barking at me.  If it only hurts when you run then it might just be a form issue, if it hurts all the time, you might want to be safe and have it looked at to rule out something more serious.  Good Luck!!!!!
